Bustling streets fill with shoppers and vendors that waft sweet and savory smells until well past midnight: this is the nightly routine at Taiwan’s famous ’night markets’. To beat the heat, these historic markets open every night after dark and are visited daily by families and tourists alike. Children play arcade games, teens and parents shop for the latest regional trends, and everyone delights in the unique flavor blends of Taiwanese street food.

In this exciting adventure, we visit a thriving culture on the other side of the Pacific Ocean – Taiwan. Taiwan embraces the old and the new, having a rich and deep Chinese history but also a young democracy and major player in the global economy. During this trip we will travel through the winding streets of Taipei, Taiwan and explore a unique cultural element – the night market. Night markets are gathering places for family and friends to eat, shop and play. Join us as we see the sights and sounds, and even try to smell the culinary treats like stinky tofu and oyster omelets!

Program Details

  1. Host teacher introduces the students to the location, explaining what the Taiwanese Night Market is and why it is a valued part of Taiwanese culture and tourism.
  2. Host teacher takes the students on an interactive exploration of the market, allowing students to see the sights and sounds of a bustling Taiwanese tradition.
  3. Students see and learn about various aspects of Taiwanese culture: food, popular shopping items, music
  4. Students explore the pan-Asian offerings that are most popular in the night markets of Taiwan – including Stinky Tofu – which truly is stinky.
  5. Students help host teacher decide what the best shopping deals are on modern Taiwanese fashion and games, while they gain insight into the differing currency and how that translates into shopping value.
  6. Students learn about the traditional games for kids at the Taiwanese Night Markets.
  7. Host teacher concludes the field trip with concluding questions and comments.

  1. Students will explore the customs of a foreign culture.
  2. Students will compare their own traditions with those of the Taiwanese culture. 
  3. Students will discuss the products and music popular in Taiwan. 
  4. Students will develop an appreciation for another culture and its nuances. 
  5. Students will understand the concept of the relative value of money in different currencies.
