Join the Banyan Buddies, a group of friendly monster and kid pals, as they travel the universe in their SEL Spaceship. Just as their rocket needs fuel, the Banyan Buddies need to make sure their own brain “engines” are in tip-top shape. Monitoring their emotions is very important so that they don’t want to feel too low or stuck in overdrive. With the help of their Moody Meter, the Banyan Buddies work with students to learn to identify their emotions and self-regulate. This six-part series invites student participants to join the Banyan Buddies and embark on an SEL journey together!
Episode 3: On Red Alert
The Banyan Buddies face a variety of challenges found in the red zone of the Moody Meter in Episode Three, On Red Alert. The Buddies and students learn how to identify and communicate feelings associated with red emotions and work together to explore innovative strategies to empower self-adjusting behavior.

Program Details
Participants will identify the Zones of Regulation as a vehicle to identifying one’s own feelings and the feelings of others.
Participants will recognize good choices and the development of a growth mindset and reachable goals as essential components of optimism.
Participants will extend their learning into their real lives by connecting with their families and communities.K-5 format is a variety show that utilizes the Zones of Regulation as a framework for identifying one’s own feelings, practicing empathy, making good choices, and developing optimism. The variety show format keeps it snappy with several teachers using their personal passions to illustrate how they “get back to the green zone” to make good choices.
Middle & High School format focuses on the emotional impact of music and performance as an access point. Students choose music that represents the emotional state of their friends by practicing empathy, themselves by using the Zones of Regulation, and their future self by practicing a growth mindset. Diverse artists and performers model the skills and break down the elements that help music resonates so deeply. Follow up activities ask that students share their musical choices with the people to whom they are connected, allowing them to practice these skills and connect beyond the classroom.
